Britain’s second-largest airport, lying south of London, is less busy than nearby Heathrow but still handles more than 20 million passengers a year, making it one of the world’s busiest. From here, a huge number of carriers fly to destinations the world over, including many African cities.
There are two terminals at Gatwick - North and South - with 94 gates, 57 air bridges, 120 aircraft stands and 16 baggage claim belts. Terminals are connected by a free 24-hour monorail. Both terminals have bureaux de change and ATMs. There is a post office, and left-luggage facilities are available at both terminals. Additionally, there are lost property services, medical centres offering vaccinations, and prayer rooms.
There are many restaurants, bars and cafés located in both terminals, as well as a large number of shops, from tobacco outlets to designer clothes stores and several duty-free outlets. Other facilities include baby changing rooms, a children’s play area and showers.
Special assistance is available for disabled passengers, including specially adapted toilets and telephones, and ramps and/or lifts where necessary; an induction loop is also available. Travel-Care provides advice to anyone who needs assistance and is located in The Village, South Terminal.
Each Arrivals concourse has an information desk (tel: +44 (0) 870 000 2468) where multilingual staff are on hand to deal with enquiries 24 hours a day.
The Gatwick Express train runs to London’s Victoria Station, and Thameslink runs to London King’s Cross and other London stations. Hundreds of express coaches operate daily from both terminals. The National Express Shuttle number 025 runs to London’s Victoria Station; while number 700 operates to Heathrow Airport. The Gatwick Flyer, South Terminal only, runs to destinations east of London.
The airport is linked to the M23 motorway. Turn off at junction 9 and follow signs for the airport. Gatwick is also accessible from the A23, London-Brighton Road.
Each terminal has a short-term car park with direct access to the terminals via covered walkways. Long-term parking is available in car parks farther from the terminals, and a free shuttle bus runs between the car parks and both terminals. There is designated parking for the disabled, as well valet and chauffeured parking.
