Cradled in the curve of land that opens on to the Ligurian Sea, Genoa is a fascinating city with many faces. It is a modern metropolis that nevertheless preserves its historical roots in the picturesque old town, through artistic masterpieces, and in its century-old parks.

Genoa’s modern aquarium, Acquario di Genova, built in 1992, is the largest of its kind and one of Italy’s major attractions. The aquarium boasts 40 tanks, showcasing species from the Ligurian Sea as well as creatures from the rest of the world. Visitors to this fabulous complex will see all manner of aquatic animals, ranging in origin from the coral reefs of the globe to the Amazon River basin.

Genoa’s historical centre is a labyrinth of narrow streets permeated by magnificent churches and exquisite palaces resting side by side with humble houses. Historical highlights in the old town encompass the Civic Gallery of the Red Palace and the Civic Gallery of the White Palace.

The former is a 17th century palace housing a notable collection of paintings, including some masterpieces by Veronese, Reni and Guercino. It also has displays of sculpture and ceramics, and an exhibit of gilded baroque statuary.
The White Palace dates from the late 16th century but has been refurbished since, and the edifice appears to be from a more recent era. Its artworks include significant paintings from the Dutch and Flemish schools, and a wide range of European creations.

The true essence of Genoa is not found in its palaces or museums, but in old town alleyways and markets, where street vendors abound and the smells of coffee, perfumes and pesto linger in the air. The Mercato Orientale is a sprawling food market which sells all the culinary wonders of the Ligurian countryside as well as every kind of seafood imaginable.

Outside of Genoa, take a fascinating excursion to Cinque Terre (Five Lands). These eight kilometres of rocky coast were declared a National Park in 1999 and have been a UNESCO protected territory since 1997.

Genoa is located on the main autostrada (A10) that begins at the French border and continues along the Ligurian coastline. Buses and trains provide transport to other parts of Italy and Europe. Alitalia and other carriers fly into Aeroporto Internazionale di Genova Cristoforo Colombo, six kilometres west of the city centre in Sestri Ponente.
