Gibraltar is located at the southernmost tip of Spain’s Iberian Peninsula, but is a British self-governing colony. It is a tiny area of land, measuring only six square kilometres in total, and is multicultural, with the population made up of Gibraltarians, British, Moroccans, Indians and Spanish.

Gibraltar is best known for its trademark Rock, a limestone and shale rock that stretches for five kilometres and measures 426m in height. It contains 143 caves, 48kms of road and a plethora of long tunnels. There is a cable car which transports visitors to the top of the rock, providing spectacular views on the way up.

Going through the rock are the Great Siege Tunnels – a network of passages that were carved during the late 18th century to serve as defences. They cover approximately 50kms, and some sections are open to the public.

St Michael’s Cave is a dramatic natural grotto where Neolithic inhabitants of the Rock once lived, and where presently concerts are sometimes held. It is a magical venue, and the cavern system acts as a fabulous auditorium.

Gibraltar Museum traces the area’s history from prehistoric times to the present day. It has fascinating historical displays and architectural structures, including a detailed model of the Rock dating from the 1860s, and an old Muslim bathhouse. In the 18th century sieges, much architecture was destroyed, but around the museum you can still see British fortifications.

Entertainment options on Gibraltar range from restaurants, pubs and nightclubs to discotheques and live entertainment. In the sunlight hours, visitors can take advantage of the walking trails and the ocean, with swimming, sailing and diving all popular activities.

The bay curves around to a pair of capes – Malabata to the east and Spartel to the west; both make a pleasant detour if you have some time to kill.

If you are driving to Gibraltar, you may want to park at the La Línea border and walk across to avoid the long queues. There are no regular buses in Gibraltar, but the bus station at La Línea in Spain is only a five-minute walk from the border and offers connections to destinations all over the Iberian Peninsula and Europe. Gibraltar Airport is easily accessed and has flights to and from most major European destinations. There are three ferries a week between Gibraltar and Tangier in Morocco.
