Glasgow is the most Scottish of cities, with a unique blend of friendliness, urban chaos and energy. It also boasts excellent art galleries and museums, as well as numerous good-value restaurants, countless pubs and bars, and a lively arts scene.

With its ornate Victorian buildings, the heart of Glasgow is centred on George Square, dominated by the City Chambers that Queen Victoria opened in 1888. Of the statues in the square, the most imposing is that of Sir Walter Scott, set atop a 25m column. Naturally, you'll find a statue of Victoria, along with her beloved Albert, plus a likeness of Robert Burns. The Banqueting Hall, lavishly decorated, is open to the public on most weekdays.

World-class museums include: the spectacular Burrell Collection; the new Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art; the Hunterian, with its exhibits by the designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh; and Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery. Glasgow's Botanic Gardens (open daily from 07:00 to dusk) cover 16 hectares. The gardens encompass an extensive collection of tropical plants and herb gardens, and are well known for spectacular orchids and begonias.

Sauchiehall Street has a pedestrian mall with numerous High street shops at its eastern end, and pubs and restaurants at its western end. Argyle Street, running parallel to the river, and pedestrianised Buchanan Street, are also important shopping streets. Glasgow's cultural reputation is further enhanced by the city playing host to many major Scottish artistic companies, such as the Scottish Opera and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Glasgow is an excellent gateway for exploring the heart of Burns country. Culzean Castle and the resorts along the Ayrshire coast are an hour away by car. From Glasgow, you can also tour Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine and the Trossachs. Also on Glasgow's doorstep is the scenic estuary of the Firth of Clyde, which you can cruise on a paddle steamer.

By car, the M74 motorway services the city from the south; while the M8 takes you here from Edinburgh. Regular trains from London and Edinburgh arrive at the central station all day. Buchanan bus station is used by several bus companies serving many British cities. Glasgow International Airport (16kms west) mainly handles domestic flights and has good bus and rail links with the city.
