Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden and is located on the country's west coast. The city's grand harbour is also known as the 'natural gateway to the West' and is a vital artery for Sweden.

After the beautiful harbour, the city's musuems are popular attractions. The Stadtsmuseum is housed in the former headquarters of the Swedish East India Company and boasts an impressive display of porcelain, along with the famous Äskekärr Viking ship.

Nearby, the Maritima Centrum allows visitors to roam aboard the destroyer and submarine moored at the quayside. Alternatively, Götaplatsen is the modern cultural centre of Gothenburg. Art enthusiasts will want to stroll around the Konstmuseet (Art Museum), which houses Impressionist paintings, pop art and superb Swedish works.

Botaniska Trädgården (Botanical Garden) is a beautiful oasis where you can relax. The botanical gardens were first opened to the public in 1923 and feature long, winding paths stretching for a few kilometres through the gardens. In spring, the blooming rhododendron valley is one of the most stunning sights of Gothenburg. Alternatively, for those shopping for some local arts and crafts, Lerverk is a permanent exhibit centre for 30 potters and glass-making craftspeople.

Nearby the city is the Gothenburg archipelago, consisting of Vrångö, Brännö, Styrsö, Vargö and the other inhabited isles - each with their own charm. East of Gothenburg is the town of Vadstena, on Lake Vättern. The towering Renaissance castle of Vadstena Slott overlooks the harbour and lake beyond.

You can get to Gothenburg by car from either Malmö or Helsingborg via the E6 north. Gothenburg is 280kms north of Malmö and 226kms north of Helsingborg. From Stockholm, take the E4 west to Jonköping and continue west through Borås to Gothenburg (470kms).

The most travelled rail route is between Gothenburg and Stockholm, with trains leaving hourly in both directions; the journey time is about 4 hours, 40 minutes. There are several buses from Helsingborg/Malmö daily. Trip time from Helsingborg is 3 hours, 30 minutes; from Malmö, 4 hours, 30 minutes; from Stockholm, 7 to 8 hours. The Stena Line has six ferry crossings per day in summer from North Jutland (three hours). They also offer twice-weekly service from Harwich (England), taking 24 hours. There are many daily flights from Copenhagen and Stockholm to Landvetter Airport, 26kms east of Gothenburg.
