Gran Canaria is one of the Spanish Canary Islands, and is blessed with lovely weather, wonderful beaches and exquisite scenery. The island is also known for its vibrant nightlife and is the perfect holiday destination, offering something for everyone.

The island’s major hub is Las Palmas, with the expansive beaches of Playa de Las Alcaravaneras and Playa de Las Canteras. The old district of Guiniguada is a historical goldmine, with many old buildings. The Cathedral de Las Palmas is located here and is a particularly beautiful structure. La Luz Castle, in La Isleta Bay, is also noteworthy and dates back 500 years.

The Centro Atlântico de Arte Moderno (Atlantic Centre of Modern Art) and the Casa de Colón (Christopher Columbus House) are both excellent museums, as is the Science and Technology Museum.

Leisure options abound on Gran Canaria, with most of these centred on the sea and the beachfront. Scuba diving and snorkelling are popular, as are surfing, windsurfing, fishing, sailing and jet-skiing. Leisure activities farther inland include cycling and hiking.

Outside the town of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria offers a wide range of exquisite and diverse scenery. The volcanic landscape is interspersed with pine forests, banana plantations and sand dunes, and there are a number of hiking trails which provide a pleasant way to explore the island and enjoy its natural beauty.

There are also many quaint villages to visit around Gran Canaria, such as Puerto de Mógan, and vibrant areas offering numerous entertainment options, such as the San Bartolomé de Tirajana district.

Because of the remote island nature of the Canaries, they can only be reached by sea or air. Gran Canaria has its own international airport, Aeropuerto de Gando, which handles approximately five million passengers per year. Ferries travel back and forth between mainland Spain (Cadiz) and Gran Canaria on a weekly basis, and there are also ferries between the islands.
