The capital of Granada province, Granada lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, in Andalusia. The city holds countless numbers of historical and artistic buildings, many of which show the traces of the Arab designs from which they were converted after the Arabs were driven out of the city centuries ago.
The historical quarter of the city is worthy of lengthy exploration. One of the most fascinating streets here is Calle de Elvira, where you can see the remains of ancient Iglesia de San Andrés with its Mudjedar bell tower. Much of the church was destroyed in the 19th century, but there are still some notable sculptures and paintings in the remaining sections.
Iglesia de Santiago, dating from 1501, is located nearby. To the west of Calle de Elvira is the old Arab quarter, situated on a hill rising above the city. The Alhambra and the Generalife – the royal palaces of the Nasrids – are spectacular and should be added to any sightseeing tour of Granada. Sacromonte is an area of hillside caves that were once the homes of gypsies; here, there are wonderful views of the Alhambra.
Granada’s most romantic street is the riverside Carrera del Darro. In the 19th century, many Romantic artists made etchings of scenes along Carrera del Darro, and it is still possible to find some of these etchings in the antique shops along this road.
If you’re shopping for gifts or souvenirs, visit the Alcaiceria, an old Arab market. Alternatively, Cuesta de Gomerez sells Spain’s traditional Fajalauza pottery and taracea (wood inlayed with ivory, shells and mother-of-pearl).
Nightlife is most vibrant in the area of Pedro Antonio de Alarcon, which has numerous bars. Flamenco shows are another popular night-time attraction at Los Jardines de Nepturno, Los Tarantos, Reina Mora and the caves of Sacromonte.
If you feel like a change of scenery, visit nearby Jerez, famous for its sherry, horses and flamenco dancing. Alternatively, enjoy the charming, historical town of Ronda.
Granada is connected by superhighway to Madrid, Seville and Málaga. Trains and buses connect the city with Madrid, where there are links to other destinations in Europe. Granada’s airport serves flights to and from Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid and Palma de Majorca.
