The 65-million-year-old, 1,900 square mile Grand Canyon National Park offers breathtaking panoramic views, spectacular colours and plentiful recreational opportunities.
Carved out over millions of years by the Colorado River, the Canyon has two main destinations for tourists, the South Rim and the North Rim. The South Rim is the most easily accessible, and therefore the most popular. Three scenic drives are to be had in this area. The short Village Loop Drive features Mather Point, the site of many people's first look into the awesome gorge with its ever-shifting palette of colours ranging from tranquil pastels to vibrant yellows and fiery reds.
Another short drive is the eight-mile West Rim Drive, closed to private cars in the summer, which features attractions such as Trailview Overlook, with views of the San Francisco Peaks, Red Butte and Bill William's Mountain. Also on this drive you can see Bright Angel Trail down in the Inner Gorge; Powell Memorial; Hopi Point; Mojave Point; the Abyss; Pima Point; and Hermit's Rest.
The much longer 50-mile (round-trip) East Rim Drive takes visitors to several of the Canyon's most amazing sights. Yaki Point affords impressive views of the massive flat-topped butte of Wotan's Throne, while Grandview Point, one of the highest points on the drive, reveals several dominant buttes including Krishna Shrine and Vishnu Temple.
The more isolated North Rim similarly offers a combination of scenic drives and rewarding hikes. Cape Royal, accessible by road along the Cape Royal Road or by foot along the Cliff Springs Trail, is the site of the famed Angel's Window. Transept Trial is also a popular hike on the North Rim, while Bright Angel Point is yet another easily reached Canyon observation point.
Park facilities include lodges, restaurants, campgrounds and picnic areas. Rafting on the Colorado River can be arranged, while guided tours into the Inner Canyon and sightseeing flights are also popular. Wildlife abounds, with the North Rim in particular home to some unique animals. The flora also differs significantly between the two rims.
The closest large airport to Grand Canyon National Park is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (4 hours' drive away), with frequent connections with major US cities. The small Grand Canyon Airport (15 minutes away) caters to smaller aircraft and charter flights.
