The fascinating and historic city of Groningen is located in Groningen province, one of The Netherlands' most commercial and industrial areas. Seagoing vessels sail up the 24-kilometre Eems Canal from the city of Groningen to Delfzijl, the largest port. Groningen is a great base from which to explore the nearby towns of the province as well.

Groningen's main attractions are its two beautifully designed central squares: the 15th century Martinikerk and the Renaissance Goudkantoor in the Grote Markt. Cars are banned from the picturesque historic centre. Part of this area was destroyed during WWII; however, many of the medieval and 16th and 17th century structures survived. The University of Groningen was founded in 1614 and its student population keeps the city vibrant.

Klokkengieterijmuseum (Bell Foundry Museum) is located within the former Van Bergen Bell Foundry, which received commissions from all over the world. Exhibits explain the history of bell casting and there are casting demonstrations (by appointment) and carillon concerts. Groninger Museum is comprised of four pavilions surrounding a golden tower. Each pavilion exhibits a different theme: archaeological finds and the history of the city and province; Eastern ceramics; decorative arts; and paintings, prints and sculpture from the 16th century to the present.

Hortus Haren is home to exotic flowers and plants from around the world and is a lovely place to stroll. Alternatively, from June through August, you can enjoy regular cruises along the canals of Groningen. Additionally, the city boasts superb hotels and restaurants. With its large student population, Groningen offers plenty of moderately priced eateries, most of them around the Grote Markt.

Leeuwarden is just 50kms away and great for a daytrip. Like most Dutch cities, Leeuwarden is best seen on foot. An interesting sight is Mata Hari (statue) , which is the most famous figure in Leeuwarden's history, and the Frisian Museum has devoted exhibition space to her complex and mysterious life of this character.

Groningen is 183kms northeast of Amsterdam, and by car, you can take the E22 north, cross the IJsselmeer on the Afsluitdijk to the Frisian shore, and then either continue on E22 to Groningen, or switch to the A31 and N355 via Leeuwarden. There are trains arriving here every hour or so, with a journey time of three hours. The train and bus stations adjoin each other south of the city centre.
