Situated just 20kms west of Amsterdam, Haarlem is popular as a daytrip destination and is known as the 'city of music and art'. As the capital town of Noord-Holland province, Haarlem is quite cosmopolitan but retains a relaxed atmosphere. It is scenically located near beaches and beautiful bulb fields, and offers a scattering of elegant manor houses and picturesque villages.

Haarlem is home to two of Holland's finest museums. Frans Hals Museum is the premier attraction of the city, and the galleries are the halls and furnished chambers of a beautiful house with an equally stunning garden. Famous paintings by Frans Hals and other masters of the Haarlem school are on display. Teylers Museum is the oldest public museum in the country (1784) and offers a unique collection of drawings by Michelangelo, Raphael and Rembrandt, as well as exhibits of fossils, minerals and skeletons, and instruments of physics and a strange collection of inventions.

While strolling into the town centre, you may catch a glimpse of the Church of St Bavo (Grote Kerk) towering above the streets. This impressive church, dating from 1520, is located in the market square. Its interior is light and airy, with tall whitewashed walls and sandstone pillars. Especially noteworthy is the Christian Muller Organ, built in 1738, and played by Handel and Mozart.

The most relaxing and enjoyable way to see Haarlem is by canal boat, with departures every hour. Additionally, the town has plenty of good restaurants and some charming pubs. For more excitement, you'll want to head to Amsterdam.

The tiny but charming village of Spaarndam is eight kilometres northeast of Haarlem and boasts some spectacular scenery. It is perhaps best known for its monument (erected in 1950) to a fictional character who has become an everlasting symbol of the Netherlands: Young Pieter (of Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge, 1865), who saved Haarlem when he plugged a hole in the dyke with his finger.

By car from Amsterdam, take the A5/N5 west to Haarlem. There are trains departing at least every half-hour from Amsterdam Centraal station to Haarlem; journey time is 15 minutes. There are also buses every 15 minutes or so leaving from outside Centraal station, but they take significantly longer than the train.
