Halifax is a city of old traditions, historical sites and great natural harbours. Located on Nova Scotia's southern Atlantic shore, Halifax has a wealth of geographical wonders. There’s also a healthy student population, which makes nights out on the town an enjoyable experience.
The best sights include the Maritime Command Museum, which has some good national displays, shops and exhibits. On Upper Water Street, there is an abundance of historically important buildings; while the Halifax Citadel National Historical Site is one of the most popular attractions in Canada.
The pedestrian-friendly downtown area stretches west from the water to the Citadel, the star-shaped fort on the hill. Other streets that are pleasant to stroll around are Cogswell Street to the north and Spring Garden Road to the south.
Driving around Halifax, you’ll come across the Eastern Passage, which is only a few minutes from Dartmouth. This is the site of the daring escape of the notorious privateer ‘Tallahassee’. Take McNab's Island Ferry to the historic island at the mouth of Halifax Harbour.
Oak Island (also known as Treasure Island), located only a 40-minute drive from Halifax, offers the visitor a chance of finding buried treasure. The town of Oxford, which is the blueberry capital of Canada, has unbeatable blueberry pie.
By car, entering Nova Scotia from New Brunswick, take Trans-Canada Highway 104 to Truro, then take NS Highway 102 to Halifax. The VIA train station is six blocks south of the downtown area, and trains from Montreal arrive daily through eastern New Brunswick. Halifax International Airport has direct services to and from Montreal, Toronto and St John's in Newfoundland. The airport is 39kms from the centre of town on Highway 102, north towards Truro.
