Situated on a busy harbour and surrounded by rivers and lakes, Hamburg is one of Germany’s major port towns. Geographically, it is located on a peninsula between the North Sea in the west and the Baltic Sea (Ostsee) in the east. It is a progressive city that has nevertheless managed to retain its old-world charm and historical architecture.

The city centre is divided by the Alsterfleet Canal, with the Neustadt (modern district) located on the opposite side of the canal to the Altstadt (old city). The Neustadt is permeated by baroque buildings, including northern Germany’s largest baroque church, the famous Michaeliskirche. Picturesque Peterstrasse is also flanked by numerous baroque buildings, and features the popular Johannes Brahms Museum.

The Altstadt suffered severe damage in the Great Fire of 1842, but fortunately many grand old buildings and churches have since been restored or rebuilt. Highlights here include the neo-Romantic St Petri and the neo-Renaissance Rathaus.

The Kunstmeile (art mile) features Hamburg’s best art museums and galleries, and will appeal to art lovers and art shoppers alike. For additional chic shopping and entertainment, head to the eastern side of the Neustadt, where fashionable boutiques, superb restaurants and trendy night spots are located.

The weekly Sunday Fishmarkt offers a rather different shopping experience, but is vibrant and atmospheric, with stall owners offering fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables. The market has been going since 1703.

Located 60kms west of Hamburg is Stade, a charming town with a picturesque harbour, historical buildings and quaint houses. History buffs will be delighted with the Schwedenspeicher, a history museum that was used as a food warehouse during the Swedish occupation of Stade.

Also of interest is St Wilhadi Kirche, a 14th century Gothic church. Nearby is Lübeck, in Germany's northernmost state, Schleswig-Holstein. This glorious medieval town has earned its place on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

Hamburg can be reached by means of autobahns A1 and A7, which intersect in the city's south side. Trains and buses travel to and from regional and international European destinations. Hamburg International Airport has flights to and from 130 destinations; there are regular transatlantic routes, as well as non-stop European flights.
