Hann Muenden is blessed with a uniquely attractive geographical position at the point where the Werra and Fulda rivers converge to form the Weser. Its scenic splendour is increased by a backdrop of hills and the Kaufung, Reinhard and Bram forests, leading poet Alexander von Humbold to name it ‘one of the seven most beautifully situated towns in the world’.

Hann Muenden is also drenched in history, and contains numerous historical buildings, including a profusion of half-timbered houses that date back 600 years. The Town Hall was constructed between 1603 and 1618, and is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Weser Renaissance style.

Particularly noteworthy is the structure’s historical glockenspiel, depicting a scene from the life of the 18th century travelling physician Doctor Johann Andreas Eisenbart. Within the building is Welf Schloss, with an impressive collection of Renaissance frescoes.

An additional building of interest is the Tillyschanze, a historical lookout tower that affords excellent views of the old town. The ancient Guelph Castle, situated directly on the River Werra, houses one of Lower Saxony's oldest museums. Founded in 1898, it emerged from a collection of relics and a large number of models by the well-known sculptor Gustav Eberlein.

One of the city’s modern attractions is the result of the Wasserpuren Project, a town-planning initiation which was carried a few years ago and redesigned the inner city greens with interactive water performances and water art.

Hann Muenden’s old town is a good shopping and dining area, with many unusual little shops, cafés and restaurants available. For outdoor leisure options, the surrounding countryside offers the optimal environment for hiking, cycling or water sports on the three rivers.

Outside the city, attractions include Bursfelde Abbey and Münden Nature Park, one of Germany’s oldest nature parks. It is characterised by rolling hills, meadow valleys and the area’s trademark rivers.

Situated on the A7 autobahn, Hann Muenden is centrally located on the edge of the Weserbergland region, 150kms from Hannover and 200kms from Frankfurt. By train, take the ICE to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, then a local service to Hann Muenden (16 minutes); alternatively, take the ICE to Göttingen, then a local service to Hann Muenden (36 minutes). There are several options if you are travelling by air: Kassel-Kalden (25kms); Paderborn (60kms); Hannover (140kms); or Frankfurt/Main (220kms).
