Oahu Island is the main island of the Hawaiian group and, while the capital Honolulu has its share of entertainment, most tourists head straight for Waikiki Beach with its accommodations, restaurants, bars, shops, and crescent of fine white sandy beach. Dominating one end of the beach, spectacular Diamond Head is the highest point on the island and affords magnificent views. While on Oahu, take in the sun and observe others at Slaughterhouse Beach, try your hand at windsurfing at Hookipa Beach, or snorkel around Honolua Bay.
The sombre memorials of Pearl Harbor and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific remind visitors of the tragedy of WWII. The Valley of the Temples and Chinatown offer insights into Asian cultures with a Taoist Temple and Shinto Shrine, while the Foster Botanical Garden contains the Buddhist Kuan Yin Temple. Kapiolani Park includes the Waikiki Aquarium and Honolulu Zoo.
Golfing and other recreational activities, first-class international cuisine, fine shopping and luxurious accommodations are all features of Oahu Island.
The other main islands of the Hawaii group each have unique offerings. Maui's main town has some interesting 19th century architecture, namely the Old Courthouse (now a gallery of local art), Baldwin House and Wo Hing Temple. Maalaea Bay, Maipoina Oe Iau Beach Park, Kamaole Beach Park and Keawakapu Beach will delight surfers and windsurfers. Big Hawaii Island features the incredible Volcanoes National Park and the scenic Hamakua coastline. Kuaui Island boasts Waimea Canyon, while Lanai and Molokai Islands both possess unique scenery of incredible beauty.
The majority of international flights to Hawaii arrive at Honolulu Airport, which operates frequent connections to the other islands. Shuttle services from the airport to the city and Waikiki Beach are regular and reliable.
