for Jersey car hire
Located near to the coast of France, Jersey is the largest and most cosmopolitan of the UK's Channel Islands. Despite this, it retains a charming and serene atmosphere, and has some stunning, unspoilt scenery.
Jersey is best known for its pristine beauty featuring long, clean, sandy beaches and rugged coastline. Additionally, the island's interesting heritage is clearly marked by Neolithic burial mounds, lovely Medieval castles, and even WWII bunkers scattered about the landscape.
The capital and centre of activity on Jersey is St Helier. In the summer, the city's streets and squares are bustling with varied and original street entertainment. Attractions here include an array of museums, a famous zoo and evening concerts in Howard Davies Park. The Jersey Museum explores the history, traditions and culture of the island through many exhibits and activities; part of the museum has been restored to recreate the Merchant's House, an example of a house of a wealthy shipbuilding family in the 18th and 19th centuries. Additionally, there are 25 major festivals, including the Jersey Food Festival, held each spring.
You'll also find most of the island's best shopping and nightlife in St Helier. There is tax-free shopping in a wide range of shops and boutiques, including many of the UK's top names. Other entertainment is in the form of cinemas, theatres, an opera house, and an arts centre, as well as many bars and nightclubs.
There is a good assortment of historical sites around the island, including the 500-year-old Elizabeth Castle. Also worth seeing is the German Underground Hospital, comprised of a series of underground tunnels built by the Germans during WWII. The Channel Islands Military Museum in the town of St Ouen, located to the northwest of St Helier on highway A12, is housed in a restored German bunker built during WWII and displays both British and German military artefacts. The frequent ferries and boat trips also make the other Channel Islands, including Guernsey, attractive daytrip options.
The roads on the island are good, but traffic can be a problem on the busier routes and around rush hour times. A car ferry operates to and from Portsmouth and takes 10 hours, 30 minutes. Regular ferry-boats arrive from ports in southern England and the port of St Malo, France. There are also high-speed catamarans from both Poole and Weymouth, taking less than four hours. Jersey Airport has flights from many UK and European cities, with London Heathrow just an hour away. The airport is about eight kilometres from the capital.
