Kansas City is a sprawling metropolis straddling the Kansas-Missouri state line. The city retains something of a small-town atmosphere, with tree-lined boulevards and a large number of parks spread over gently rolling hills. It is famous for its steaks, barbecue, jazz, rich frontier history, and unique attractions.

Many visitors come to Kansas City to shop, and the options are plentiful. The Country Club Plaza is a huge complex containing 180 stores with an extensive range of items for sale, from electronics goods to quality designer clothes. For those who like haggling, the outdoor City Market (open daily) has stalls selling everything from antiques to clothing to flowers.

With its strong connection to jazz, Kansas City boasts a fine museum with displays telling the stories of some great jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Also in the same building is the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which has exhibits on the segregation that accompanied baseball in America.

Night-time entertainment is centred on the city’s downtown area. No matter what night of the week, Kansas City offers superb live jazz music in some top-rate night clubs.

Hire a car to discover some of the delights of both Kansas and Missouri states. Topeka (Kansas) lies an hour west of the city and is a laid-back town featuring the Mulvane Art Museum; while smaller Lawrence has a fantastic history connected with the famous Underground Railroad. In Missouri, Jefferson City is noted for its Carthage Marble Italian-Renaissance capitol and Thomas Hart Benton murals.

By car, interstate highways I-70 (east-west), I-35 (north-south) and I-29 (northwest) all converge on Kansas City. Amtrak has daily rail services from Chicago and St Louis to Kansas City, with trains running on to San Francisco. Greyhound Lines has extensive bus services throughout the state connecting with cities farther afield. Kansas City International Airport receives much traffic; alternatively, if you fly into St Louis, there are regular connections to Kansas City.
