The county of Kerry, with its spectacular coastline and green pastures inland offers the visitor outstanding scenic beauty. There are also plenty of lakes, coastal sandy bays and rocky headlands to add to the breathtaking scenery.
Killarney National Park is the home of Ireland's only remaining wild herd of native red deer and the largest area of old-growth oak woods. The Lakes of Killarney are beautifully dotted with small islands, the most noteworthy being Innisfallen. Kenmare Castle and Muckcross House are found within the National Park. The town of Killarney is immensely popular with tourists, largely due to its delightful atmosphere, live music and traditional Irish crafts.
Tralee, the bustling capital of County Kerry, is home to the internationally renowned 'Rose of Tralee' festival. Tralee has great recreational facilities and a well-preserved 18th century port. Killarney, Kerry's second town, offers good shops and restaurants and is situated within easy reach of some of the most beautiful countryside in Ireland, with mountains, island-studded lakes and wooded glens.
Scenery is by no means Kerry's only attraction; there are many coastal resorts with excellent angling, great cycling, superb golf courses and a wealth of ancient monuments. The dramatic 'Ring of Kerry' is a road that slowly winds its way around the Dingle Peninsula, offering spectacular coastline and stunning mountain views. In South Kerry there are golden beaches at Ballinkelligs and Rossbeigh, and at Kells, with panoramic views of Dingle Bay, the Blasket Islands and Kells Bay.
The nearest airport to Kerry is Cork International Airport, just outside Cork City. It has numerous flights from London, Manchester and other UK cities. There are also flights from some major European cities as well as from Dublin and Belfast. For US visitors, Shannon International Airport is the nearest option - a three-hour drive from Kerry.
