Situated in picturesque southwestern Ireland is the pleasant town of Killarney. A popular tourist retreat, this town boasts some fantastic scenery and a local tradition that is atmospheric and endearing. Maybe the one drawback of this part of Ireland is the heavy rainfall; then again, without the rain it wouldn’t look so beautiful.

One of the main reasons for visiting Killarney is the Lakes of Killarney - a series of gorgeous lakes with small islands dotted on each. Innisfallen is a remarkable island that can be reached by rowboat. Boat trips depart from Kenmare Castle, which is a great sight in itself. Also in the national park is Muckcross House, which is a must-see.

You can take a horse-drawn cart, or just walk around the streets by yourself. Whatever you do, you’ll be sure to fall in love with town. The tight lanes are a pleasure to explore, and there are lots of good craft shops and eateries scattered throughout the town.

If you have your own car, then you should head up to Ladies View - a site which affords the visitor a glimpse of spectacular scenery. This area is also a haven for walking and cycling enthusiasts. One of the cycling trails through the beautiful valley of the Gap of Dunloe is especially outstanding.

Another good excuse to come to Killarney is to drive the Ring of Kerry, a spectacular three-hour drive that follows the convuluted coast usuing up endless breathtaking scenery before reaching the quaint fishing villag of Dingle and returning home. Be sure to set early so you don’t get stuck behind a tour bus!
In the many pubs, as well as plenty of Guinness, you’ll find ‘diddly eye’ music, created when fiddles, penny whistles, bodhrans and uilleann pipes all combine to create a captivating Celtic sound, unique to Ireland. The pub atmosphere in Ireland is one of the country’s most loveable features.

At least a half-dozen major national roads lead to Killarney. They include the N21 and N23 from Limerick, the N22 from Tralee, the N22 from Cork, the N72 from Mallow, and the N70 from the Ring of Kerry and West Cork. Irish Rail trains from Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Galway arrive daily at the Killarney Railway Station. Bus Eireann operates regularly scheduled service into Killarney from all parts of Ireland. Aer Lingus offers flights from Dublin into Kerry County Airport, 16kms north of Killarney.
