The small town of Knock, in County Mayo in the west coast of Ireland, was made famous in 1879 when an apparition of Mary, St Joseph and John the Baptist was seen by 15 people. Since then, the town has become a pilgrimage destination for scores of Christians every year. The Pope visited here in 1979, which further increased the town’s popularity.
The town itself is pleasant and has transformed over the years to accommodate the many religious visitors. Most people come to Knock to view the shrine although there are some other sights worth seeing. The most impressive buildings are: the Basilica of Our Lady Queen of Ireland and the Church of the Apparition.
Ceide Fields is a 5,000-year-old Stone Age site situated eight kilometres west of Ballycastle and containing a 1,500-hectare archaeological site of stone walls, field systems, enclosures and tombs. At Ceide Fields Visitors' Centre, you’ll be given a comprehensive history of the site.
The beautiful and rugged landscapes of the Connemara region lie about 50kms from Knock. Here you’ll be afforded spectacular views as you pass through the richly coloured valleys and mountain roads. The small town of Spiddal is a good stop-off point, while the Lough Inagh valley and Kylemore Lake are breathtaking.
Knock is located on the N17 road, midway between Galway and Sligo. It is about 72kms from Galway and 224kms from Dublin. There is an Iaranrod Eireann train service from Dublin to Claremorris, about 9.6kms from Knock. Trains are infrequent though, and quite expensive.
Knock International Airport, 13kms from Knock, has limited flights from Dublin, London and Manchester. This is by far the most convenient option, though it would be advisable to book well in advance during peak holiday seasons. The other options are Dublin International Airport, a four-hour drive, or Shannon International Airport, a three-hour drive away.
