Kranjska Gora is a resort town in northwest Slovenia, close to the Austrian and Italian borders, situated in the Julian Alps. It offers an intimate setting with few crowds, low prices and savoury cuisine, but is still within easy reach of Western European resorts like Treviso in Italy and Nassfeld in Austria.
Kranjska Gora is the heart of the Zgornjesavska Valley, one of the most breathtaking Alpine valleys. The valley has developed into a major tourist and sports region, famed primarily for its World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing and ski flights on the giant ski jump in Planica.
There are 30kms of mainly intermediate slopes, as well as some gentle and more open lower slopes for less experienced skiers. Additionally, a number of more challenging runs are suitable for more advanced skiers. The mostly northeast-facing slopes of the Vitranc Mountain are where skiing usually takes place. There are a total of 20 runs, consisting of 13 beginner, four intermediate and three advanced runs. There are also 18 surface lifts and five chairlifts to transport skiers to the top. The resort is located at an altitude of just over 800m, with its highest ski point at 1,291m.
The resort offers a great selection of bars and discos, and there are good off-slope diversions and excursions. Hiking, cycling and horseback riding are all popular activities. Other activities at the ski resort include: ice-skating, curling, indoor tennis, swimming and sauna. The region also features two casinos.
Other great ski opportunities exist throughout the region, including Zakopane (Poland), Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo (Bulgaria), and Jasna and Strbske Pleso (Slovakia). Treviso in Italy is 30 minutes away by road, and Nassfeld in Austria is an hour away.
Slovenia has excellent roads, with border crossings from Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Train and bus service into the country is excellent. Kranjska Gora is only 75kms (an hour by car) from Ljubljana Airport.
