Located literally in the middle of the desert, Las Vegas is divided into two distinct districts. The compact downtown area is known as Glitter Gulch, while a few miles south is the area most associated with the city, the corridor of Interstate 15 lined with hotels and casinos called the Strip. The huge combined hotel-entertainment centres such as Caesar's Palace and the MGM Grand are attractions in themselves, however the real drawcards for many tourists are the slot machines, roulette and craps tables, cabaret shows, concerts and big fights.
As a result of the enormous profits made by the casinos, the city abounds with some of the cheapest yet most luxurious accommodations and restaurants in the United States. Alcoholic drinks, while they may be watered down, are often served free of charge.
Tired of pulling handles? There is plenty of stunning natural scenery in the surrounding area to delight nature lovers. The snow-covered peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range boast rugged alpine scenery, green valleys and sandy deserts. Take the 12-mile Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive and explore the grandeur of the Wheeler Peak National Park. Another breathtaking scenic route is the three point six-mile gravel Baker Creek Road. Both roads are closed in winter.
Other Nevada attractions include the imposing, natural Lexington Arch of Lexington Canyon, while the spectacular barren desert landscape of Death Valley is acclaimed as one of the wonders of the natural world.
Las Vegas is served by McCarran International Airport, which is convenient for travellers arriving from Europe, Canada and from other US cities. Transport into the city is both regular and reliable.
