Recently restored for the World Expo, Lisbon has returned to the glory of its hey days as the centre of a great maritime power. A delightful town, ancient buildings and Portuguese charm all contribute to its appeal.
Alfama, with its narrow cobbled streets, is Lisbon's oldest district. It sits beneath a hill on which stands Castelo de São Jorge. Views from here are excellent and the famous Romanesque Sé (Cathedral) can clearly be seen below. Nearby is the equally historic Baixa district, grandly rebuilt after the devastating 1755 earthquake.
The riverfront of the Tejo is typified by ornately tiled placas and tile-fasciaed buildings. Chiado is a shopping district, and the nearby Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara offers the finest views of the city.
West of the city is Belém, central to Portugal's Age of Discoveries. Here you'll find the Torre de Belém, and the newer limestone Monument to the Discoveries, both of which commemorate Portugal's maritime glory. Nearby is the magnificent Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (monastery), a survivor of the earthquake and one of the best Manueline architectural examples in existence. More modern is the Museo do Design, a collection of 20th-century mind-bogglers.
By night the Barrio Alto, with its restaurants, bars, nightclubs and street hawkers, comes alive. Camera toting tourists can head over the river in Cacilhas (southside) to see the Cristo Rei, a smaller version of Brazil's giant Christ of the Andes statue.
Many visitors to Lisbon make the 45-minute trip to Sintra, a World Heritage site that is prettily set among forests against a backdrop of hills. Once the hangout of kings and queens, its main attraction is the Disney-like Palácio Nacional da Pena. Alternatively, the peaceful Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish castle) is quieter and offers panoramic views of the town.
Many airlines have scheduled international services to and from Lisbon Airport, Portugal's main international gateway. There are also regular domestic connections to Faro, Oporto and other cities.
