Known the world over for its football team and a certain band called the Beatles, Liverpool is one of the UK's most popular tourist cities. It has an important maritime history and is now a cosmopolitan city with a lively character.
Many come to Liverpool to pay homage to the Beatles and there are several 'Beatles' tours on offer, visiting well-remembered places such as Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane and the site of the Cavern Club, where they started out.
Liverpool's location on the broad estuary of the River Mersey has left the city with an important legacy of shipbuilding. Although now in decline, the industry has, over the years, attracted a large Irish population, who are partly responsible for the sharp sense of humour that is typical of Merseysiders.
Other attractions include: Speke Hall, a marvellous example of an Elizabethan hall about 10 kilometres south of Liverpool, Paul McCartney's childhood home, now part of the National Trust, the enormous Metropolitan Cathedral and Anfield football ground.
Chinatown's Berry St restaurants offer excellent oriental cuisine and Slater Street offers a good choice of eateries. Liverpool nightlife can be rowdy, especially after football matches from either Liverpool or Everton FCs.
Liverpool's John Lennon Airport only receives a few continental flights; nearby Manchester Airport is busier, but the bulk of international visitors arrive in London and catch a train (3 hours). Rail in the UK is efficient and trains are frequent. You can also arrive from Ireland by ferry.
