Located in the head of the lovely Rhone valley, Lyon is one of France's most populous cities. It is very much a hard working city, but with a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
The old town sits beneath the hill of Fourvière and consists of maze of narrow streets and traboule (passages). Rue St Jean is the focus of activity and leads to the impressive Cathédrale St Jean (dating from the 12th century). A funicular spirits visitors to the top of the hill where there are well-preserved Roman remains, including two excavated theatres. The Musée Gallo-Romain et Parc Archéologique de Fourvière is also located here. The Basilique de Fourvière also stands out and offers great views from the top.
The rest of Lyon is more modern, for it is one of France's industrial and commercial centres, hosting the HQs of many European organisations, as well as Interpol. The magnificent Palais des Congrès Institut Lumière reflects the city's cosmopolitan character. In the Gerland Quartier there is a newly developed precinct that includes a marina and park that attracts the locals to its École Normale Supérieure.
Lyon has a number of good museums, including the Musée d'Art Contemporain, Musée Historique de Lyon and Musée de la Marionnette (puppet dolls). A charming puppet performance is put on several times a day at the Théâtre de Guignol.
The Parc de la Tête d'Or is a nice escape from this very urban landscape, and features ponds and rose gardens, botanical gardens, a small zoo and lots of amusements for kids.
The Monts du Lyonnais, a modest range covered in forest and cherry orchards with a few charming villages dotted about, are just to the southwest of the city.
Lyon-Saint-Exupéry International Airport is a busy airport with flights to 31 French destinations and 40 international cities, including North American destinations. Lyon is also a major French rail hub.
