In less than a decade Manchester has emerged as one of the UK's most 'happening' cities, boasting a lively music scene and some interesting civil redevelopments, making good use of the legacy left by the city's cotton industry and the industrial revolution.

Among the cafes and bars of Castlefield is a reconstructed Roman fort that gave birth to Manchester in 79AD, a worthwhile visit. Several fine Gothic buildings and churches are found in the city centre clustered around the bustling Albert Square.

A devastating 1996 IRA bomb gave town planners an excuse to redevelop the area around the Arndale Centre into a modern precinct. Nearby you will find the Corn Exchange, the Royal Exchange and Longridge House.

Other attractions include the 'hands-on' Museum of Science and Technology and the Museum of British Aerospace. There are also often good exhibitions at the G-Mex Exhibition Centre. History buffs can step back in time by visiting the Quarry Bank Mill, a working 18th-century cotton mill museum in Wilmslow.

Manchester's real appeal is its unique atmosphere, and there are many bars and restaurants scattered about the centre, as well as a few legendary clubs. The Palace Theatre and Bridgewater Hall offer more 'highbrow' entertainment, while the redeveloped Salford Quays area is packed with theatres, galleries and exhibition centres, as well as alfresco restaurants. The Gay village is another lively area, typified by weather worn viaducts, massive warehouses and moth-eaten market buildings.

Hiring a car is worthwhile simply to visit the beautiful Peak District area, several hours' drive east of the city. It is Britain's oldest national park.

Manchester's busy international airport receives regular flights from Europe and the occasional transatlantic flight, but many visitors prefer to land in London and take the train (2 hours).
