France's most important Mediterranean port is steeped in 2,500 years of history, and continues to thrive as a busy centre. Today Marseille is a cosmopolitan city rich in North African and European influences, with a modern and multi-cultural atmosphere.
A Roman Byzantine-styled basilica, Notre Dame de la Garde (c.1853), dominates the city from a 154m hill, offering good views of the Vieux Port (Old Port) and La Canabiere (an exciting market area). The Vieux Port is guarded by the 13th century Bas Fort St Nicholas, which is worth exploring.
The city's cultural offerings include many museums, most notably the Musee Cantini (devoted to modern art), Musee Grobet Labadie (Royal furniture), Musee De Beaux Arts (housed in the incredible Palais Lonchamps), Musee de la Faience (porcelain) and Musee d'Histoire de Marseille.
There are many fine beaches near the city centre and pleasure cruises are a popular way to admire the Vieux Port. Nearby La Canabiere has a vibrant nightlife, numerous restaurants, bars, hotels and also offers excellent shopping, particularly local crafts and produce.
Near Marseille, and easily accessible by car, are beautiful beaches and the breathtaking Marseille cliffs. Further along the coast is the Frioul Archipelago, with its quieter beaches and well preserved wilderness areas, perfect for hiking and cycling.
Marseille is a major regional transportation hub and can be easily reached by air and rail. Its international airport has direct flights to over 80 worldwide destinations. There are also regular connections by train to all major cities in the region, including 12 high-speed TGV trains a day to Paris (3 hours) and to many other cities in France.
