Memphis is where WC Handy put down on paper the first written blues music; where ‘The King’ made his first recording; and where Otis Redding and Al Green expressed the music in their souls. The city is also renowned for its shopping and vibrant nightlife, and, of course, Graceland Mansion.

Probably the most famous attraction in Memphis is the luxurious Graceland Mansion, former home to ‘The King’, Elvis Presley. There are daily tours to the museum/shrine, complete with gold discs and shag pile carpets. Another much sought-after attraction is Sun Studios, where recordings of some of the world’s most famous artists took place; several of the original microphones are on display.

Most of the action is centred on or around Beale Street, including the WC Handy Memphis Home and Museum and the nearby park and statue in his name. Also on Beale is the famous Orpheum Theatre, a popular venue hosting outdoor concerts; the National Civil Rights Museum, site of Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination in 1968; and the renowned Gibson Guitar Plant, just behind Beale Street on Third.

Memphis is also a shopper’s paradise, and there are many shopping malls and plazas where you can find quality merchandise. Some trendy shops have recently been appearing in midtown, particularly in the Cooper-Young area. Beale Street is the epicentre of Memphis's nightclub scene, with more than half a dozen clubs, plus a few other bars, restaurants and theatres.

There are a lot of options for those exploring the region by car. Reverend Al Green’s Full Gospel Tabernacle, where you can experience a brilliant sermon of preaching and singing, is near to the city. The charming town of Savannah, to the east, is home to the Cherry Mansion, General Grant’s headquarters during the battle of Shiloh, and the nearby Shiloh National Military Park.

By car, Memphis is accessed via the I-55 (north-south) and I-40 (east-west) highways; the I-240 is a ring road around the city. Additionally, Memphis is on the New Orleans–Chicago rail line. By bus, Greyhound Lines buses service the city and go on to other state destinations farther afield. Flights arrive at Memphis International Airport from most US cities.
