Milan is Italy's second largest city after Rome and its economic heart. Wealthy and cosmopolitan, the Milanesi enjoy a reputation as successful businesspeople, embracing tradition, sophistication and ambition in equal measure.
Milan's major religious attraction is da Vinci's The Last Supper, restored and safely on display to limited numbers in the refectory of the Convento di Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The Duomo dominates Milan's central square. It is Italy's largest and most intricate example of Gothic architecture. Perego's Madonnina statue keeps her vigil from the cathedral's highest spire. From the top is a breathtaking view over the city and on a clear day you can see the snow-topped ring of the nearby Bergamo Alps. The imposing Castello Sforzesco nearby includes several museums housing some stunning sculptural works.
Piazza Cordusio is one of the busiest places in the city, home to the Italian Stock Exchange and Chamber of Commerce - making it a hive of constant activity. A favourite shopping area is the Piazza degli Affari. Milan has an enviable opera and music scene, the centerpiece being the world-renowned Teatro alla Scala on the lovely piazza of the same name.
Pavia is a quaint town on the banks of the Ticino River, less than an hour from central Milan. The best feature is the Gothic Certosa di Pavia, a 14th-century monastery with fantastic murals. To the north, the serene Lombardi plains rise into the Alps and are inlaid with a series of stunning blue lakes, Lago Maggiore being the most popular. Parco dell'Adamello, the biggest of the national parks, has excellent hiking trails, while Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio is more Alpine.
Malpensa is located 48kms northwest of Milan and is the city's biggest airport, handling transcontinental and other international flights. Most domestic and some European flights use Linate Airport (seven kilometres from the city centre). Transportation from both is frequent and reliable.
