This luxurious, high-class tax haven plays host to billionaires and gamblers from all over the world. This fairytale land built on luck is where the rich and famous flaunt their money and prestige.
Monte Carlo Casino is Monaco's most famous landmark, a grand neo-classic building located on a hill across the bay. It is a favourite hangout for Europe's elite and welcomes high-rollers and those elegantly dressed.
Monaco's Royal Palace has been around since the 13th century and reflects the tastes of every Grimaldi that has ruled during Monaco's 700 hundred-year history. Every day the ceremony of the Changing of the Guard is performed here on the Palace Square. Built in 1875 using white stone from La Turbie, Monaco Cathedral stands on the site of a 13th century church dedicated to Saint Nicolas and houses the tombs of the former Princes of Monaco.
The marina is like a fishpond for the rich and famous, with its displays of super yachts and wealth. The Musée Océanographique is probably the best aquarium in Europe, with 90 seawater tanks and a display of living coral. The zoological terraces contain numerous species of tropical and African fauna housed in exemplary conditions. The Musée d'Anthropologie Préhistorique is interesting and Monaco also has a fascinating Exotique Jardin with over 7000 varieties of cacti. For a pleasant day of people watching simply stroll along the café pavements.
Literally up the road is Nice, the commercial and tourist hub, with its winding streets and squares full of Genoese, Provençal, medieval and Baroque architecture. The best beaches are found further west in the popular seaside town of Antibes and continue around the corner to Cannes, known for its international film festival.
The nearest international airport to Monaco is west of Nice, and the trip takes about 45 minutes by car. There are regular flights to Nice Airport from many European cities and limited trans-Atlantic flights. In all, 40 airlines land at this airport which serves as a hub for the Cote d'Azur and is only seven kilometres west of the city.
