Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Massif Central Mountains, the city of Montpellier is an elegant city, replete with historical sites and an abundance of charming cafes, restaurants and parks. Walking the town streets is a pleasure. Alternatively, a horse drawn carriage can take you around the city.
At the Church of St Anne you’ll find a high steeple that is visible throughout Montpellier. Nowadays, the Church of St Anne contains an art gallery that exhibits the work of artists from Montpellier and elsewhere. The 14th century Cathedral St Pierre has remained intact over the centuries. The church joins a former Benedictine monastery, now the Faculty of Medicine, which is the oldest in Europe and was founded in 1289.
The area known as the Ecusson is the best place to explore on foot. Strolling around its narrow lanes, you’ll come across startling Renaissance architecture, charming courtyards and many shops, bars and restaurants. You’ll also find the Tour des Pins and the Tour de la Babotte, two towers that date back to the 12th century.
Located outside the town’s boundaries is the place de la Comedie. The place is home to the 18th century Opera Comedie Theatre and the Fountain of the Three Graces, which lies in its centre. Here the atmosphere is always buzzing with lively cafés, markets and street entertainers.
The surrounding Languedoc region is a great area to go exploring by car. With natural underground caves and pristine beaches, it’s a good place relax and enjoy a picnic. Montpellier is also close to Carcassonne, Beziers, Narbonne and Nimes, all of which are delightful to visit.
Montpellier can be easily accessed by road from other cities in Europe. Follow the A9 from Spain; the A8-A9 from Italy; the A7-A9 from Paris and northern Europe; and the A75 from Paris or central France. Every day, 11 high-speed TGV trains leave the Gare de Lyon, Paris, for Montpellier. Montpellier Mediterranean International Airport receives daily return flights to Paris and several other international cities. The airport is located eight kilometres southeast of Montpellier, and transport is provided from the airport by both bus and tramway.
