Montreal - sky guide
for Montreal car hire
One of Canada's most charming cities¸ Montréal is distinctly French and is known for its lively and easygoing atmosphere, though it also boasts plenty of history and culture to match its cosmopolitan character.
Vieux Montréal (Old Montréal), is centred around the two-hundred-year-old place Jacques Cartier (market square). The atmosphere here is delightful and attractions include: the magnificent Hôtel de Ville, place d'Armes, the enormous Basilica Notre Dame and Chapelle du Sacré Coeur. Nearby is the Promenade de Vieux Port (Old Port) along the waterfront. The area of narrow, cobbled streets around rue St Paul is charming, with cafes and quaint shops. Nearer the commercial district, the unmissable Cathédrale Basilique Marie Reine du Monde stands out among the skyscrapers.
Rue Ste Catherine is the shopping and people magnet of the city. Nearby is the Chinatown district, and several commendable museums are found here, including the Musée d'Art Contemporian and Musée des Beaux Arts.
The Quartier Latin is the Paris-style student district along lower rue St Denis, site of the Université du Québec à Montréal. It's full of trendy bars, open-air cafés, bistros and clubs. Nearby is the lively 'Village', with its distinctly gay atmosphere. Blvd St Laurent and rue St Denis are also entertainment hubs. Carrée St Louis is also interesting, though a little sleazy. Little Italy is another good spot for dining.
During the day you can lose yourself in the Parc des Îles (situated on two islands on the St Lawrence River). With its origin in the 1967 World Fair, the amusement park complex includes Casino de Montréal, a Grand Prix racetrack, Biosphère, artificial beach and plenty of parklands with walking and biking tracks.
The impressive (and controversial) Parc Olympique was only really fully completed in 1990 (15 years after the games), but it has a number of impressive sights, including the Stade Olympique, Montréal Tower, Biodôme and botanical garden, and draws the crowds.
Dorval International Airport is one of Canada's busiest, and is situated 22kms west of the city. Flights to US destinations and other Canadian cities are numerous, and there are regular transatlantic flights to all main European destinations as well.
