Nantes is attractively situated on an island in the estuary of the mighty Loire River, 382kms from Paris. It is a wealthy industrial port with numerous notable historical sights, surrounded by the grace and beauty of the Loire Valley region.

Nantes’ most renowned attraction is the Château des Ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes of Brittany), which dominates the wide boulevard, quai de la Fosse. The castle is a 15th century structure that once belonged to the original Bluebeard, and is even more sumptuous than the majority of the Loire Valley’s gorgeous châteaux.

Close to the castle is the memorable Cathedrale Saint-Pierre with its exquisite stained-glass windows, a trademark feature of the city skyline. The cathedral was severely ravaged by bombing raids in WWII, but was subsequently restored over a 13-year period; today it is the only cathedral in France with a fully restored interior.

The city is home to some fine museums, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which exhibits sculptures and paintings from the 12th to 19th centuries. Additionally, the Musée de Jules Verne contains items related to the famous futuristic novelist who was born in Nantes.

Nantes has more to offer than just its historical attractions, however. Parks, gardens and squares decorated with brightly coloured flowers are scattered throughout the city and provide serene environments in which to enjoy a leisurely day. Nantes also has a thriving nightlife, with a multitude of cultural events and festivals, and a plethora of bars and restaurants. An additional favourite with visitors is a trip to the city’s famous opera house with its fabulous classical and operatic performances.

If you are keen to explore Nantes’ surrounds, there are plenty of charming hamlets, cosy farmhouses and beautiful stretches of moors to keep travellers busy. Nantes is situated only 50kms from the Atlantic, with many lovely coastal towns easily accessible by car. Situated 78kms northwest of Nantes, the town of Le Baule is known for its warm waters, sandy beaches and luxurious accommodation.

To reach Nantes by road, take the A11 west of Paris. High-speed trains run regularly from the capital to Nantes, and buses also connect the two destinations. Aéroport Nantes-Atlantique is located 12kms southeast of Nantes’ town centre. The airport is not serviced by international carriers, so, if you’re coming from abroad, you’ll have to fly in to Paris.
