Nashville is a vibrant city, best known as the ‘country music capital of the world’. The city also boasts excellent shopping opportunities, as well as some historic buildings.

Perhaps the most famous attraction is the Ryman Auditorium, which was, until 1974, the site of the original Grand Ole Opry, and has a history dating back to 1892. Visitors are invited to take a tour of the complex. Also of special interest is the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, located near Music Square and boasting exhibits on the performers.

A walking tour of downtown is highly recommended. Those interested in historical buildings should take a look at the State Capitol, the Governor's Georgian-style mansion, and Fort Nashborough. The Tennessee State Museum retells the history of the state, and includes information about the Ku Klux Klan. Alternatively, military buffs should head for the Memorial Building. The Riverfront Park, together with the promenade, is great for strolling.

For night-time entertainment, The District, in the downtown area, is loaded with live music venues featuring all styles of music, from country and blues bars to jazz and rock clubs. The Hard Rock Café, featuring rock memorabilia from around the world, is a favourite haunt for locals and tourists alike.

If you have a car, head north to Music Valley and the modern day Grand Ole Opry House. Live shows featuring big names are staged every Friday and Saturday night. The Hermitage is Nashville’s most historic home/museum, and was originally the home of the seventh US president, Andrew Jackson; additionally, the mansion and gardens are beautifully kept. For a slice of nature, the nearby Tennessee Hills contain many Civil War battlefields and old towns.

Passing through Nashville is the north-south I-65 (Kentucky-Alabama) and the northwest-southeast I-24 (Illinois-Georgia); I-40 (Knoxville) approaches from the east. There are no trains to Nashville, but Greyhound Lines has excellent bus services in and out of the city to destinations all over the state and nationwide. Nashville International Airport is just east of town, and is connected by the Gray Line Airport Express shuttle bus.
