New Orleans - sky guide
for New Orleans car hire
A mix of French, Spanish, Cajun and African cultures, sumptuous cuisine and great music makes a holiday in New Orleans a unique and rewarding experience.
The French Quarter is the centre of old New Orleans. Both Bourbon Street and Jackson Square are filled with artists and street musicians playing pianos, blues guitars and all assortments of musical instruments. The Quarter is also home to several museums of note, including the Cabildo and Presbytere museums on Chartres Street as well as the Historic Voodoo Museum on Domaine Street. Other attractions in the area are St Louis Cathedral, the Old US Mint, the French Market and Farmers' Market.
The Garden District, two kilometres south of the Quarter, contains fine examples of historic Spanish and French architecture. The sinister Lafayette Cemetery No.1, connected with several occult and voodoo movies, is located here also, while the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium of the Americas cater to the whole family.
For a taste of Cajun culture, head south and west of the city. Lafayette, near to the picturesque regions of Bayous and swamps of Bayou Teche, and Thibodaux, with its Wetlands Cajun Cultural Center, provide insights into this distinctive French-Canadian refugee culture. 'Real' swamp tours are available at Kraemer, while the Fontainebleau State Park offers opportunities for camping and hiking. A pleasant day trip can be made to Lake Ponchartrain, which boasts a 24 mile-long bridge - reputed to be the world's longest.
New Orleans International Airport has very few direct flights from destinations outside the United States, so connections from other major US cities are necessary. Regular and reliable shuttles transport tourists to the downtown district.
