Newcastle upon Tyne is the largest city in the northeast of England and has always had a strong local identity. Characterised by Roman remains and Victorian architecture, the modern Newcastle of today is a city of stylish boutiques, fine restaurants and a vibrant nightlife.
The ancient city of Newcastle takes its name from Castle Garth (‘new castle’), built by William the Conqueror’s son in 1080, the ruins of which can still be seen. Perhaps the most endearing sight in the city is the series of bridges, especially the famous steel arch of the Tyne Bridge and the swing bridge.
A stroll around the city will reveal the remains of the 13th century town walls and the cathedral of St Nicholas (largely 14th century). The city has numerous art galleries and museums, and is the home of the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra. Grey Street, famous for its superb examples of outstanding Victorian architecture and Grey’s monument, a 41m tower erected in honour of the local former Prime Minister, is another of Newcastle’s highlights.
What Newcastle lacks in serious sightseeing it more than makes up for with entertainment and shopping options. Shoppers are well catered for, especially at the Eldon Square Shopping Centre, which is well stocked with quality stores. There are numerous theatres and cinemas, fine international restaurants, traditional pubs and themed bars, and some quality nightclubs.
There is also much to attract the visitor outside the city, best seen by car. Amazing Hadrian’s Wall was built by the Romans to keep out the marauding Picts and still contains many of its turrets. The new town of Sunderland is well known for its museums, beaches, funfairs, and the Lambton Worm Garden, a children's adventure playground. The Metro Centre, in nearby Gateshead, is Britain's largest shopping complex, attracting shoppers from Europe.
The main M1/A1 (M) motorway runs up from London to Newcastle with the A1 continuing on to Edinburgh. Hourly trains leave London for Edinburgh, reaching Newcastle in three hours (express), and regular National Express coaches service the city from cities countrywide. Newcastle Airport is only 10 minutes from the city, with regular shuttle and rail transfers.
