Niagara Falls is one of the world's biggest waterfalls, attracting 12 million visitors annually to the Canadian town situated on the north bank of the gorge.
The falls consist of three main falls, the most impressive being the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. There are fantastic views from the precipice on the north bank, and from here you can also see excellent views of the Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls. In fact, there are several ways to experience the falls; from the 'Maid of Mists' boat, below, through underground tunnels beneath the falls, and even up above in a suspended gondola. Every minute, an average of 168,000 cubic metres of water plunges over the mile long series of falls and, during winter, massive ice blocks form, adding a spectacular element to the falls.
Niagara town has plenty of entertainment to offer and has become a popular destination for honeymooners. Attractions include: an Imax theatre, the Butterfly Conservatory, Botanical garden and Ripley's Believe It or Not. There are also great views of the falls and entire area from the top of the Minolta and Skylon towers.
There is a road following the gorge downstream for 11kms, with several great lookout points. Nearby is the Welland Canal, an engineering feat of epic proportions. Also in the area is the Niagara peninsula, a good wine growing region, as well as the lovely shorelines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. For something livelier, the cosmopolitan city of Toronto is less than an hour's drive away.
Niagara is two hours' drive away from Toronto's Pearson International Airport. This busy airport handles long-haul international flights, as well as connections to numerous North American destinations.
