Nice is the hub of France's Cote d'Azur and was a popular Mediterranean tourist destination long before the impressionist artists made it their home in the 1930s. Located on the sweeping Baie des Anges, the city is full of belle époque buildings, historic museums, restaurants, cafes and bars.

In spite of modernization, the city retains its medieval heritage in the Vieux Ville (old town), with its narrow winding streets and closely packed red-tiled roofs. The streets are jammed with shops and quaint restaurants. Presiding over the old town and seafront is the 92m hill known as Le Château.

The most exotic architectural feature in Nice is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral with its ornate and exotic interior. The Musée Massena has an excellent collection of artefacts dating back to Roman times from the Nice-Piémont region.

Other notable Baroque architecture includes the Cathédrale Sainte Réparate, and Chapelle de la Miséricorde. The Palais Lascaris is a beautiful example of Genoese Baroque architecture. The Promenade des Anglais is a popular people magnet on the city's waterfront, notable for the art deco Palais de la Méditerranée casino and grand Hôtel Negresco.

Cimiez, the hilly northern suburb behind the city, is the location of the ruins of the ancient city of Cemenelum and a 16th-century monastery. It is here that you will find several museums dedicated to Picasso, Matisse and other impressionist artists who once lived in Nice.
The hinterland is a maze of hilltop villages connected by winding mountain passes. The views are spectacular, and sights include the chapel with 15th-century frescoes in the medieval village of Peillon and the views from L'Escarène.
There are regular flights to Nice from many European cities and limited trans-Atlantic flights. There are 40 airlines landing at this airport, which serves as a hub for the Cote d'Azur and is only seven kilometres west of the city. Connections to Paris and other French cities are numerous.
