The Languedoc-Roussillon town of Nīmes is well located between Provence, the Camargue and the Cevennes, and is within easy reach of some of France’s most visited cities. It has an ancient past that spans history from Roman times, and is preserved through its impressive historical structures.

The Roman amphitheatre is one of the best-preserved pieces of architecture from its time, standing two storeys high and featuring 60 arches on each floor. Today it is used to host ballet performances and bullfights. Other notable old buildings are: the remnants of Diana’s Temple in La Fontaine Gardens, and the Maison Caree, an archaic Roman temple that is now utilised for floating cultural and art exhibitions.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts is the city’s largest museum and not to be missed if art is a source of inspiration to you. It houses a fabulous collection of works, with a range of French sculptures and paintings from the 17th to 20th centuries, and Dutch, Flemish and Italian works from the 15th to 18th centuries. The Museum of Antiquities, featuring local historical exhibits, is also of interest.

The scenic beauty that permeates the surrounding region is best seen from the Tour Magne, where on a clear day it appears as though southern France in its entirety is at your feet. Nights in Nīmes also offer a variety of attractive options. The city is scattered with excellent restaurants serving delicious French and Provencal fare, and numerous bars provide after-dinner entertainment.

Northeast of Nīmes is Avignon, with its fantastic Palais des Papes, a fortress of 10 towers and battlements which also boasts luxurious tapestries and frescoes. The city is also known for its delicious cuisine and its famous summer festival of music and drama. The interesting city of Montpellier lies in the opposite direction, centred on the lively place de la Comédie and brimming with Roman history.

Nīmes can be reached by car via the A7 highway from Spain, connecting with the A9, or via the A6 from Paris, connecting with the A7 at Lyon and the A9 at Avignon. Buses and trains run between Nīmes and other French destinations, including Paris and Montpellier. There is a small airport on the outskirts of the city which is only suitable for light aircraft. However, nearby Montpellier Airport receives traffic from all over Europe.
