Located on the Italian island of Sardinia, Olbia has grown steadily over the years to become the most important port town in the northeast. Its name, meaning ‘happy town’, reflects its lively, friendly atmosphere.
Olbia’s rich historical heritage can be witnessed in the many old buildings peppering its narrow streets, the most notable of which is the old cathedral, constructed over a Roman necropolis. It is located in Olbia’s historical quarter and dedicated to Saint Simplicio, who was the bishop of Olbia in the 3rd century.
The Romanesque structure is entirely made of granite and houses a fascinating collection of Roman memorial tablets obtained from the necropolis beneath it. Also of note in the old town is the 17th century Gallurese Church of San Paolo.
Off Olbia’s coast are 24 ancient shipwrecks, a reminder of Olbia’s long history as a trading port. At least 16 of these date from the 5th century; two are from the age of Neron; and six are from the Judicial period.
The town is filled with a diverse variety of enticing restaurants to suit all tastes and any budget. The old town brims with open-air bars and cafés, overflowing with sailors and tourists making merry. Just off the corso on via delle Terme is the stylish Zhanto, which serves mouth-watering cuisine and is a favourite with locals and visitors alike. If you’re after some traditional Italian fare, La Lanterna, off the other side of the corso on via Olbia, offers sublime pizzas.
Olbia is a good springboard from which to explore the resort of Costa Esmeralda and the island of La Maddalena. Also nearby are several archaeological sites: the Nuraghic ‘Palace’ of Cabu Abbas; the Holy Well of Sa Testa; and a giant grave site.
Olbia can be reached by means of ferries from Europe or by air. Olbia’s international airport is situated just over 17kms south of the city and transportation is easily arranged to and from the airport.
