Portugal's second-largest city, Porto, holds a magnificent position on the gorge of the River Douro. This gracious capital of the north is known for its port wine and its unpretentious charm.
Part of the city was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, and Porto was named a European Capital of Culture in 2001. It boasts several important attractions, such as the Terreiro de Se, with a 12th century fortress church. Nearby, the Casa Museu De Guerra Junquiero is a museum dedicated to the poet Junquiero. São Francisco Church is a magnificent affair with a striking, gold-crusted interior.
Crossing the impressive Dom Luís Bridge to the southern bank of the River Douro brings you to the world famous port lodges, which offer tours followed by a port sampling session. At the Solar Vinho do Porto, an elegant 18th century villa ringed with roses, you can sample glasses of every port produced in Portugal.
The historical district of Ribeira, on the riverside, is a picturesque area of jumbled lanes and quaint arches. The area is being restored on an ongoing basis, and many enticing restaurants, bars and nightclubs are popping up here.
The Barredo section is also a centre for dining and nightlife, brimming with atmospheric bars, restaurants and accommodation options.
Porto has good road connections with the capital and with Spain to the north. The Lisbon-Porto superhighway cuts driving time between Portugal's two leading cities to just over 3 hours. From Spain, the nearest border crossing is at Tuy-Valença do Minho, where you can head south for 125kms to Porto on the N13.
Twenty-six trains arrive per day from Lisbon; the trip takes 3 to 5 hours and costs €21 one-way. Aeroporto Francisco de Sá Carneiro, 14kms north of the city, has daily flights to Lisbon, from where you can get a flight to most major cities in Europe.
