Oslo is the oldest Scandinavian capital and is scenically located at the head of the Oslofjord. The city boasts an eclectic blend of old and new architecture, and also features excellent museums, parks and monuments. Additionally, Oslo is the jumping off point for many easy excursions either along the Oslofjord or to nearby towns and villages.

The highlight of the city is the 13th century medieval Akershus Fortress, featuring dungeons with dark, damp cells, as well as brighter grand banquet halls and lavishly decorated staterooms. The charming chapel here contains the crypts of King Håkon VII and Olav V. The fortress was used by the Nazis during WWII as a prison and place of execution, but today contains the Norway Resistance Museum, with exhibits of Norwegian life under the German occupation.

Henie-Onstad Kunstsenter Museum has the largest collection of modern art in Norway. The Edvard Munch Museum is home to more than 5,000 drawings and paintings by Norway's most famous artist; Munch's most famous painting, The Scream was regrettably stolen in 2004 and the museum therefore has been temporarily closed until the summer of 2005 for a security upgrade. Nearby, Vigeland Museum and Park displays the works of the renowned sculptor Gustav Vigeland. The Norwegian Folk Museum is an outdoor museum comprised of 140 original buildings reassembled on 14 hectares of the Bygdøy peninsula.

Oslo's nightlife is varied, with bars, clubs and pubs to suit all tastes. If you visit the city in the winter season, you can see its popular opera and ballet company, Den Norske Opera. Plays given at the Nationaltheatret (where Ibsen is regularly featured) are in Norwegian.

The nearby Bygdøy Peninsula is just across the harbour from Oslo. The highlights here are a large open-air folk museum and maritime museums housing excavated Viking ships and Thor Heyerdahl's balsa raft Kon-Tiki. Additionally, there are restored stave churches and some nice beaches. Farther afield is the Nordmarka, a wilderness area on Oslo's northern border. Alternatively, the charming fishing village of Risor boasts a picture-perfect harbour, and the island of Stangholmen is worth seeing as well.

For those driving here from the mainland, a car ferry makes the crossing from Frederikshavn, Denmark, to several towns near Oslo, and to Gothenburg, Sweden. Highway E6 runs the length of Sweden's western coast from Malmö through Helsingborg and Gothenburg, to Oslo. If you're driving from Stockholm to Oslo, takethe E3 west to Örebro, where it connects with the E18 to Oslo. Trains arrive here from the continent, Sweden and Denmark. Passenger ferries arrive at the Oslo port, a 15-minute walk from the city centre. Oslo International Airport in Gardemoen is about 50kms east of downtown Oslo.
