The capital city of Canada, Ottawa, has some great historical sites and a number of interesting museums. What is most pleasing about this city is the abundance of parkland, canals, lakes and rivers. The traffic is not too heavy and pollution isn’t a problem; for a capital city, Ottawa really is quite a pleasant place.
The neo-Gothic Parliament Building is perhaps the city’s best man-made structure, while Rideau Hall is also worth visiting. The hall is the residence and workplace of Canada’s Governor General, and is located on charming Sussex Drive, adjacent to Parliament Hill.
Other places of interest include the War Museum, the Royal Mint, and the National Gallery. While walking around downtown, you’ll find the lively Byward Market, east of the canal, which is a good place to shop for fresh food and dine in the many restaurants. The western downtown area has more brand name shops and higher priced eateries.
The surrounding countryside of Ottawa is wonderfully preserved and easily navigated. The Laurentian Mountains is a beautiful area covered in lakes, quaint European-styled villages, and ski resorts. Some of the better resorts include: Saint Sauveur des Monts Saint Agathe des Monts (skiing), Mont Tremblant (skiing) and Parc de Mont Tremblant (summer activities).
Algonquin Park is a massive wilderness area with a host of activities on offer. People come here from far and wide for hiking, camping, canoeing and climbing. The area has no less than 1,600kms of charted canoe routes to explore.
The city of Ottawa is easily accessible by major roads, no matter which direction you are coming from. Canada’s VIA train network departs daily from the central station, bound for the east coast, and running more frequently to Toronto, Quebec city and Montreal. Ottawa's Macdonald-Cartier International Airport is serviced by 16 airlines on a daily basis.
