Perpignan, the capital of Rousillon, is located in the lower Languedoc region, 12kms from the Mediterranean coast. It is a progressive city that is simultaneously brimming with historical architecture, an elegant, well-preserved old town and fine museums. The city centre is partly pedestrianised and has two rivers flowing through it, the Basse and the Tet.

One of Perpignan’s most popular attractions is the Castillet building, housing the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires Catalans. The museum focuses on the history and folklore of the region, showcasing related local artefacts. The building itself is a redbrick gateway and fortress dating from the 14th century.

The Castillet’s tower can be climbed and offers superb views over the city.
The kings of Majorca built their palace in Perpignan in the 13th and 14th centuries, and it remains the highest and most dominant feature of the city centre. Highlights include the old throne room and the view of the Pyrenees from the tower.

The Museum of Modern Art, in the town centre, has one of the finest collections of art in southwestern France, including a large number of Picasso masterpieces and works by Chagall, Braque and Matisse. The second floor of the building displays changing exhibitions of contemporary French art.

Perpignan’s environs offer all kinds of exciting outdoor activities, with skiing, hiking and rock climbing in the Pyrenees all popular pastimes. The city’s superb cuisine is also not to be missed, and it is filled with both classic French and traditional Catalan restaurants.

The small hamlet of Salses is located approximately 25kms north of Perpignan and makes for an interesting daytrip. Its main attraction is the Château de Salses, originally built as a fort in Roman times and modified in the 17th century to take on the appearance of a château. Also nearby is Céret, the birthplace of cubism, located 31kms southwest of Perpignan in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Perpignan can be reached from the French Riviera by means of the A9 motorway. Eurolines buses and trains connect the city to other parts of France and Europe. Perpignan Airport is located just five kilometres from the city.
