The port city of Pescara is situated on the eastern coast of Italy, at the mouth of the Pescara River and facing the Adriatic Sea. It is the largest city in Italy’s sparsely populated, picturesque Abruzzo region, and has become one of the Adriatic’s prime seaside resorts.
Pescara’s biggest drawcard is its wonderful beaches and pristine waters, excellent for strolling, swimming or soaking up the Italian sunshine. The Viale della Riviera waterfront is also extremely popular with visitors and locals alike.
Every summer, Pescara is host to the globally renowned Pescara Jazz Festival. This fabulous event draws musicians and visitors from far and wide, and is a must-see for jazz enthusiasts. Over its 26 years, the festival has featured jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Johnny Hoggings, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Bob Dylan.
The Museo delle Genti d’Abruzzo, which is built on the site of an old prison, documents the history of the Abruzzo region, from its earliest origins to the present day. Also of interest is the city’s avant-garde train station.
Pescara is home to many fine restaurants, and after a day on the beach or exploring the area, it’s a supreme treat to relax and enjoy some superb Italian cuisine. Those seeking late night entertainment should head to the trendy Ex-Gaslini Club, located in an old machinery factory.
The National Park of Abruzzo is within easy driving distance of the city, and is well worth the journey to experience the incredible natural beauty and abundant wildlife, including bears, chamois, wolves, deer and eagles. The Appenines are also nearby and offer hiking, climbing, skiing and several thermal-bath spas. The Abuzzo region is also known for its picturesque villages like L’Aquila and Chieti, as well as the isolated churches throughout the countryside.
Italy’s high-quality roads make driving to Pescara a pleasant experience. The city is 240kms east of Rome via the A25/A25 or the E80. Rail and bus services connect the town with other destinations in Italy. Pescara’s airport offers daily flights to and from all of Italy’s major cities and some other European destinations.
