Philadelphia is today an inseparable mix of old and new. Scratch the surface of William Penn's ‘green countrie towne’ and you'll find both a wealth of history and plenty of modern distractions.

Philadelphia’s historic square is loaded with famous historical landmarks and buildings of outstanding architectural interest. Within a few blocks of one another, you’ll find attractions such as: Independence Hall, Carpenter's Hall (the site of the First Continental Congress), the First and Second Banks of the United States, and the Liberty Bell.

Additional sights in the area include: the Betsy Ross House (where the first American flag is reputed to have been made in 1777), and Christ Church (where Benjamin Franklin is buried).

Philadelphia, with its pretty tree-lied boulevards, colonial homes and old-style shops, was made for strolling. It’s a city of street artists, arts and crafts shops, and museums. Fairmount Park is the largest landscaped urban park in the United States, with miles of biking, jogging and hiking trails, as well as botanical gardens, recreational facilities, and preserved colonial and federal mansions.

There are some world class restaurants here serving up some of the finest cuisine anywhere, and the nightlife is buzzing, largely due to the dozen or so colleges and universities in the city. The Walnut Street Theatre is the oldest active theatre in the country and offers top-rate performances; while the Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the finest symphony orchestras in the world.

For a lovely drive through pretty countryside, head for the town of Lancaster and the Amish community, which retains a traditional way of life. East of here are the picturesque towns of Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse. The outdoor enthusiast should head for the Delaware Water Gap in the Appalachians, which is great for camping, hiking and skiing; additionally, Bushkill Falls are awesome.

Interstate 95 enters the city from the east and the I-276 turnpike runs across the north of the city. Philadelphia lies on the northeast’s main rail line, with services to all major cities in the region and onward nationwide connections. A cheaper option, Greyhound Lines buses have an extensive timetable from Philadelphia. Philadelphia International Airport has services worldwide, as well as many internal connections; rail and shuttle links with the city are convenient.
