Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, is quickly becoming one of America’s most vibrant metropolises. However, the city’s location in America’s ruggedly beautiful southwestern desert ensures it will always retain an old southwest flavour.

A main attraction in Phoenix is the Desert Botanical Garden, nestled in charming Papago Park and also containing the Phoenix Zoo. The wonderful gardens house a powerful collection of stunning and hardy plant life that adorns the local desert. This is a good place to enjoy the amazing desert environment without having to stand under the intense desert sun for long periods of time.

The Heard Museum is a good place to take a look at the local tribal history and enjoy great arts and crafts shopping. This museum is a fun place, with thousands of exhibits along with great audiovisual displays and live presentations by the jovial staff. Nearby is the Arizona Science Museum, a favourite with visitors of all ages as it contains hundreds of hands-on displays, a planetarium and a five-storey movie theatre.

The Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the ‘Valley of the Sun’, is currently booming. The Camelback Corridor, which leads through north-central Phoenix, has become the corporate heartland of the city. This mushrooming stretch of road has also become a corridor of upscale restaurants and shopping plazas, anchored by the Biltmore Fashion Park shopping centre.

The Phoenix area is comprised of several urban areas which are a pleasure to explore by car. Scottsdale, a suburb of Phoenix, boasts a magnificently well-preserved old west style old town. The Scottsdale Historical Museum and the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, conveniently located in the same building, are worth seeing. Alternatively, the Grand Falls of the Little Colorado River are located on the largest Indian reservation in America, the Navajo Indian Reservation. This is also a good place to buy Native American Indian artwork and crafts.

Phoenix is connected to Los Angeles and Tucson by I-10 and to Flagstaff via I-17. Greyhound buses run to destinations throughout the state and cities in the region, with connections to cities farther afield. Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport is the largest airport in the Southwest.
