Situated at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, Portland is a city of quiet charms. The city’s friendly atmosphere, proximity to the coast and the mountains, and its comfortable climate, make it a great place to live as well as a favourite holiday destination.
Careful urban planning has provided Portland with plenty of green areas, including a huge urban park that earns the title ‘forest’. The city’s feature which is most likely to be called a ‘tourist attraction’ is a rose garden; that should be an indication of how laid-back Portland is. Another of the city's distinctions is that it is considered to be the nation's microbrewery capital, nicknamed ‘Munich on the Willamette’.
Avid readers should be sure to pay a visit to the largest bookstore in the western US, which covers an entire city block. The 11-metre Portlandia statue is the second tallest hammered copper statue in the world, second only to The Statue of Liberty.
The popular Tom McCall Waterfront Park stretches four kilometres along the bank of the Willamette River. On the east side of the river, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) houses fascinating interactive exhibits and an IMAX theatre.
The great outdoors is one of the main attractions of Portland and the surrounding areas. The state prides itself on its scenic drives, with frequent and well-maintained parks and rest areas. The Columbia River Gorge is just 45 minutes by car out of Portland, and features over 70 waterfalls.
Multnomah Falls, Oregon’s highest falls and the second highest in the nation, are a must-see. Mount Hood, the highest peak in Oregon and a popular climbing destination, is about 90kms east of Portland. The mountain also boasts an almost year round ski season and the largest night-ski area in the US.
Follow I-84 west from Idaho, or travel north from California to Portland on I-5. Amtrak trains run from all bordering states to Portland and offer a relaxing alternative mode for experiencing Oregon’s natural beauty. Greyhound buses also offer daily service between Portland and most large towns. Portland’s public transportation features a light rail system that runs to and from Portland International Airport every 15 minutes.
