Situated beside a pristine lake and surrounded by snow-capped craggy peaks, the small and lively city of Queenstown is the tourist centre of New Zealand’s South Island and also the self-styled adventure capital of the world.

Busy in both summer and winter, it is home of the bungee jump, and still boasts the world’s highest jump – Nevis (134m), a rigged gantry above Kawaru suspension bridge in Skippers Canyon. Adrenaline junkies can continue their adventures by parachuting from a small plane and freefalling with the Southern Alps spread out below. The town is also big on white-water rafting, with numerous tour operators screaming to take you on a knuckle-whitening journey through the rapids. Also popular is one of the orginal adventure activities – jet boating down the Shotover river, an exhilirating experience.

You can also take the cable car, or if you are very hardy - the hiking trail, to one of the peaks which looms over the town. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Queenstown and its environs.

The compact town centre is full of restaurants and pubs, which in the evening are packed with people unwinding after a day filled with adrenaline-packed activities. The food on offer in many of the pubs and restaurants is top quality, and the New Zealand lamb is particularly recommended.

A long but easily feasible daytrip is to spectacular Fjordland National Park. The remote region is accessible by car and the road winds through virgin forests and dramatic mountains before stopping at Milford Sound. Here, you can take a boat trip through the narrow inlet to the Tasman Sea while watching waterfalls cascade down the steep slopes hemming you in on both sides. The scenery is breathtaking.

Another popular day trip is to Arrowtown, an historic mining town, preserved to indicate New Zealand as experienced by early prospectors. A little further away is lovely Lake Wanaka with its small town that is popular with artists. From here you can head to the West Coast and visit the Fox and Fanz Josef Glaciers.

By car to Queenstown, it is six hours from Christchurch, and 3 hours, 30 minutes from Dunedin. There is no rail route into Queenstown, but bus services are well organised and there are regular bus links with all major cities and towns. An excellent network of small private minibus services run between Queenstown and Dunedin, Christchurch and the west coast.

Queenstown has its own airport, and there are direct flights from major New Zealand cities; it is also possible to fly direct from Sydney year round and from Brisbane in the winter. The airport is situated only a short distance from the centre of Queenstown and there are shuttles and taxis to the town.
