The charming city of Reus is set in the rolling hills of the Costa Dorada region of Catalonia, not far from the coast. It is ideally situated within easy reach of almost every important town in the region and features a centre that is full of shops and restaurants. Additionally, the abundance of interesting historical architecture makes Reus the perfect place to spend a few days.
Reus is the birthplace of renowned Spanish artist Gaudi, who designed Barcelona’s famous unfinished Cathedral – the Sagrada Familia. Gaudí’s Reus Trail is a special tour enabling you to find out more about the great architect and his links to his hometown. Reus is packed full of many other architectural splendours, including the striking work of Pere Caselles, a municipal architect who designed the Institut Pere Mata, the Casa Grau and the Casa Laguna.
Confusingly, the city’s two museums share the same name but are located in different places and house different exhibitions. The Regional Salvador Vilaseca Museum at Llibertat Square presents artistic collections and modern art expositions; while the Regional Salvador Vilaseca Museum on Raval St Anna has a permanent display of archaeological finds, considered to be among the most important in Catalonia.
There are many rewarding daytrips to be made from Reus, both for those wishing to hike through the local green hills and orchards, and for the more adventurous types wanting to take part in one of the many popular outdoor activities in Catalonia, such as hunting, horseback riding and shooting.
By car, main access is by the A-7 highway towards Valencia or Barcelona. There is also the Catalonia Expressway (CA), which provides links to Tarragona, Altafulla, Torredembarra, Vilanova i la Gertrú, Sitges and finally Barcelona.
Reus train station has a good link to Barcelona, with many trains each day. The main bus station in Reus offers regular buses to and from Tarragona, Barcelona, Valls, Cambrils, Salou and many more Spanish destinations. The Costa Dorada has its own airport in Reus, situated 2.4kms from the city on the CN-420 road to Tarragona; however, most flights in the region arrive at Barcelona International Airport.
