Rhodes is one of Greece's most remote islands and is therefore less crowded. Apart from its lovely beaches, coastal villages and resorts, it boasts an astonishing history, inter-linked with the Knights Templar.

The city of Rhodes is the island's most important settlement and was site of the famous Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Few ruins remain from its past, however. The ancient Acropolis stands at the eastern end of the city, and nearby is a restored 3rd century stadium. The Avenue of Knights is the central drag of the city, ending at the Palace of the Grand Masters. The city is entered through the Pili Eleftherias (Freedom Gate). There are several noteworthy museums and a majestic Harbour Gate.

Lindos is yet another historic gem on the island, and it certainly draws the crowds. It's perhaps the most famous of the Dodecanese's ancient cities, and includes the 4th century Temple to Athena on its acropolis. Kamiros, another of the ancient cities of Rhodes, was built around the 7th century BC, and is worth visiting.

Most visitors come for the beaches however, and Rhodes has no shortage of excellent coastal locations. Faliraki Beach is the most popular resort, but if you prefer quieter locations then head to the east side of the island, especially between Gennadi and Plimmyri.
Across the island there are many restaurants serving delicious Greek dishes, with endless bars and the occasional disco in popular resorts.

The interior of the island has some charming little villages and great scenery. Try the route to Mt Profitis Ilias and Salakos.

Rhodes International Airport is located in Paradisi, about 16kms from the city of Rhodes. There are regular flights to Rhodes from many European cities as well as locally from Athens, Thessaloniki, Iraklio and Mykonos. Ferries also arrive from Athens and other Greek islands, but it's a very long journey.
